Marine Science Internship Program
June-August
The Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center offers unpaid
summer internships for high school students who have completed freshman
year. Interns work as interpreters in the Sea Pocket Lab Aquarium,
assist in animal husbandry duties, and participate in the development
and care of aquarium exhibits. Interns are also encouraged to attend
weekly educational enrichment programs, field studies and career
explorations. Interns are required to work 10 hours per week including
some weekend hours. Internships will start the middle of June and
continue through the end of August.
Youth Rowing
June 6-August 28, Tue. 6-7:30pm, Sat. 10-11:30am
For students 13+.This teambuilding program
encourages young adults to work together towards a common goal.
Students will view the harbor and their peers from a different
perspective as they propel themselves through the water in a Cornish
pilot gig, a traditional 32 foot six-oared boat. Information sessions
will be held at the Heritage Center on Saturday, May 22, from
10-11:30pm and on Tuesday, May 25, from 6-7:30pm. The cost of this
program is $50.
Coastal Explorers
August 2-6, 9:00-12:00pm
For elementary students ages 8-11. This program will
introduce students to topics in marine science through exciting hands
on lessons. During the program students will study their way up the
food chain through interactive lessons on plankton, invertebrates, and
fish. Students will explore local marine habitats and issues affecting
the marine environment. Students will be exposed to the scientific
process and have an opportunity to use the GMHC's cutting edge
scientific equipment. The cost of the program is $175/$150members and
space is limited
Pinky Program
Dates TBA, 2 One week sessions, 1-4pm
For students ages 14+. Classes will be held aboard
the Watermark, a traditional wooden boat for rowing and sailing. In
addition to rowing and sailing, students will learn maritime skills
including knot tying, nautical terms, basic navigation. Students will
investigate our local history while exploring Gloucester Harbor. The
cost of this program is $175/$150 members.
The three programs below operate on a drop-in basis
(no registration required)
Open Lab Hours
July-August, Thursdays, 1-3pm
For families with children 6+. Please join us for an
afternoon of investigation in our video microscope lab. The program
will include a lesson on marine plankton, a chance to collect specimens
and a guided lab using the GMHC's video microscopes. No scientific
experience is necessary to enjoy this one of a kind opportunity to
learn along with your children! This program is free for up to 3 family
members with admission.
Creature of the Week
July-August, Thursdays, 10:30-11:30
Each week we will highlight one of the fascinating
creatures living in the Sea Pocket Aquarium. This creature will be the
focus of a one hour program for PreK and early elementary students (3-4
year olds must be accompanied by an adult). Students will participate
in hands on explorations, craft activities, stories and games that
introduce all the fun features that make the creature unique. This
program is free with admission.
Ship Physics
Weekly Dates in July and August TBA
For students 8+. Explore the physics of shipbuilding
and sail in GMHC's exhibit, "Fitting Out." Through hands-on experiments
and interactive lessons, visitors will learn about the technology that
drove Gloucester's Age of Sail. This program is free with admission.
