Gloucester
Maritime Heritage Day!
The
Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center will hold its 7th annual Heritage
Day celebration on Saturday, September 4th, from 10 am – 5 pm. The
Center’s exhibits and aquarium will be open free of charge throughout
the day.
The recently restored 1929 John Alden designed
schooner Summerwind will be berthed at the Center from September 1—6 .
Donated to the United States Merchant Marine Academy Sailing Foundation
in 2009, the handsomely restored vessel is used as a sail training
vessel for midshipmen at the US Merchant Marine Academy at King’s
Point, L.I. Summerwind will be open for free public deck
tours on
Heritage Day from 10 am to 4.
The festivities will feature
music by Not that Blonde, the acoustic duo of Greta Bagshaw and Bryan
Thorp playing a wide mix of folk, pop, & country music. From
the
familiar to the obscure, Not That Blonde puts their own spin on the
music with sweet harmonies and crisp guitar work. Sharing the stage
with NTB will be Jim D'Augustine, a talented singer songwriter, playing
his own songs as well as adding his musical voice to Not that Blonde
John
Morris, author of Alone at Sea, will sign books and talk with visitors
from 11 am – 3 pm. At 11:30 am and again at 2 p.m. he will present a
slide show related to his book, which focuses on the trial, triumphs
and tribulations of the fishing industry in the age of the Gloucester
dorymen (1623-1939). “Morris addresses in particular the
thousands of essential immigrant fishermen—principally Nova Scotians,
Newfoundlanders, Scandinavians, Portuguese, Azoreans…and Sicilians who
did so much to make Gloucester what it was, and indeed, is today.”
(Wooden Boat Magazine, September, 2010).
Master craftsman Geno
Mondello will demonstrate traditional dory building
techniques. Tony Ashdon will teach the art of
making
seamen’s bracelets from rope. Local crafters will demonstrate their
skills and sell their work. Windrush Books will feature vintage local
history and maritime related books.
The Cape Ann Ship
Modelers will offer ship model building and ship-in-a-bottle
demonstrations. The Essex Shipbuilding Museum will display its 15’ long
model of the schooner Evelina M. Goulart. The Schooner
Ernestina-Morrissey Association will offer knot tying and navigation
activities as well as information about the vessel.
Hot
dogs, hamburgers, lobster rolls, and chowder will be available courtesy
of Lobstaland. Richie’s slush will also be available.
